WordsnDesign handles the following video types

Old video tapes from the 1980s -1990s need to be converted to digital formats if their content is to survive. Tape deteriorates and old players are increasingly hard to get hold of. Old audio cassettes from the seventies to eighties are in the same category. Tracks from old vinyl records - not available in other forms today - can also be converted.

VHS video for converting to digital format

VHS and VHS-C (compact)

Many home videos were recorded on VHS (Video Home System) camcorders that came on the market in the 1970s & 1980s, and most homes had a VHS player. Compact (VHS-C) tapes were also popular. Conversion to digital format is imperative if the content is to be saved.

Video 8 camera

Video 8/(Hi8) video tapes

These camcorders showed up in the late 80s as a consumer and pro-sumer product. WordsnDesign can handle Video8 tapes but video recorded on Hi8 camcorders can be offered only to clients who bring their still-functional Hi8 camera with them.

Mini-DV camera mini-dv tapes for conversion to modern digital formats

Mini DV (digital video)

Mini DV camcorders arrived on the scene in 1995 replacing the larger video cameras and becoming the de facto standard for home - and more formal - video production.

COSTS

VHS (video) conversion to digital mp4: (simple capture)

$60 plus GST an hour. (Note: Some cassettes have 3 hours of recorded video on them, some only 15 minutes.) Capturing VHS video is a 4-stage process, using a mixture of old and new technologies. VHS data is usually captured by a DVD recorder, then  'ripped' from the DVD to an mp4 format, then imported into video-editing software for editing, and final export to playable standard .mp4 format for playing on laptops, TVs, tablets and smartphones.

Clients wanting editing of raw video into a number of different specific movies, eg., 'birthday', 'wedding', 'family Christmas', or transitions and special effects will pay more depending on the amount of work required.

Mini-dv to digital

$70 per hour plus GST- as above.

The tapes must be playable on the client's digital camera or from a WordsnDesign Mini-DV camera for capture to be possible.

Audio cassettes to mp3

$40 plus GST per side for C60, $50 plus GST per side for C90. Costs will move around a bit depending on the amount of editing needed to restore lost quality
